Indoor Attractions in Devon
The beautiful county of Devon is renowned for its stunning coastline and lovely scenery, but there is more to Devon than just the outdoors. Wherever you are staying, there are plenty of indoor attractions nearby to ensure that your children can make the most of every day of the holiday come rain or shine.
Devon is home to numerous theme parks where you will find all-weather amusements for the family. The vast majority of these venues have plenty for children of all ages to enjoy, even when it is raining or too cold for outdoor activities. Younger children can enjoy soft play areas, ball pits and carefully designed climbing frames. Older children will enjoy ropes, trampolines, more advanced climbing and an array of other activities. Animal lovers of all ages will enjoy the region’s farming museums and petting zoos, many of which have indoor elements designed for those rainy days. With adventure and theme parks throughout the county, Devon has an abundance of exciting opportunities for all the family.
Children of all ages will enjoy some of Devon’s more unusual indoor attractions such as Torquay’s Dinosaur World. Here there is an interactive hands-on exhibition that features life-sized dinosaurs that will fascinate children of all ages, as well as a craft room and a collection of fossils.
Another interesting indoor attraction is Ilfracombe Aquarium beside the harbour in the north Devon town. Housed in the Old Lifeboat House, the aquarium has different habitats where the local aquatic life can be seen. Children will enjoy the feeding demonstrations and taking part in the free quizzes provided.
Older children will find a guided tour of Beer Quarry Caves fascinating although some younger ones may find them intimidating. Lucky visitors may catch sight of some of the bats that have made these man-made caves their home.

Many families visiting Devon enjoy incorporating some learning activities into their holiday fun. Whether you choose to stay in a traditional holiday cottage or try glamping in a luxurious yurt, you will find historical sites and buildings within easy reach. The historic Torre Abbey in Torquay houses a museum and art gallery in what is regarded as the best preserved medieval monastery in the south-west. In addition to viewing the interesting collections, there are numerous activities, workshops and events for children who also benefit from free admission.
Devon has an abundance of stately homes and castles for those with an interest in history (including some rather ghoulish tales!) Take a guided tour to see the impressive rooms and find out about the fascinating history of any of these homes. In the city of Exeter itself, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery has many collections with interesting items of local history, geology and world culture among others. The collection of Edwardian magic lantern slides will appeal to anyone with an interest in this era.
Whatever your interests, Devon has endless fun-filled activities to offer all the members of the family even when the weather is not ideal for exploring outdoors.
